Understanding Ushna (Heating Property) in Ayurveda
Ushna is the Ayurvedic property of heat primarily associated with the Fire element. It increases Pitta while decreasing Vata and Kapha doshas. Heating substances enhance digestion, improve circulation, and increase sweating while reducing urine output. Typically pungent in taste with heating potency, ushna substances have cleansing properties but can cause tissue depletion and inflammation when used excessively. They're therapeutically valuable for Kapha and Vata conditions, purgation therapy, and excess moisture. Common examples include asafoetida and mustard seeds.
