Functions: Carries nutrients that nourish bones
Controlling Organs:
- Hip bone
- Lumbar bone and tissues
Causes of vitiation:
- Excessive exercises, especially those involving friction of bones
- Food and lifestyle mistakes, such as consuming foods which lead to vitiation of doshas, especially Vata dosha
- One of the most common food and lifestyle mistake linked with issues in asthivaha srota is consumption of drying and aerated foods.
- Trauma to bones (some accident)
- Excessive intake of calcium
Symptoms and Diseases of Asthivaha srota vitiation:
- Cracking or distortion of nails and teeth
- Pain in bones and joints
- Bone cancer
- Change in hair texture
- Degeneration of bones
- Osteoporosis or osteopenia
- Excessive growth of bones (for example - calcaneal spur, extra cervical rib)
- Chronic osteomyelitis
Treatment:
- Balanced diet - correcting food and lifestyle according to one's body type
- Panchkarma cleaning depending on the type of imbalance
