Agni is of total 13 types:
- Jataragni or Kayagni - This is the type of agni which is often referred to in discussions of Ayurveda as it is observable comparatively easily. It is also referred to as the digestive fire and is the source of all the other agnis.
- 5 Bhutagnis (1 for each of the Panchamahabhutas or Elements) - Akash Bhutagni, Vayu Bhutagni, Agni Bhutagni, Jala Bhutagni and Prithvi Bhutagni
- 7 Dhatuagnis (1 for each Dhatu) - Rasa Dhatuagni, Rakta Dhatuagni, Mamsa Dhatuagni, Meda Dhatuagni, Asthi Dhatuagni, Majja Dhatuagni, Shukla Dhatuagni
